The Mercedes GLE Coupe builds on the success and premium offering of its GLE sibling to create a sporty SUV coupe. The design is more attractive and the 4x4 offering delivers grip and great handling.
Engines and performance for the Mercedes GLE-Coupe
The engine choices for the Mercedes GLE Coupe include a diesel delivering economy and a decent 0 to 62 sprint time of seven seconds and a top speed of 140 mph. However, there is a startling performance from the V8 5.4 litre AMG GLE 53 S that produces 435 HP to deliver a supercar sprint time of 4.2 seconds. The petrol engine choices are twin-turbocharged and have a mild hybrid system called EQ Boost which adds 22 HP of extra output to the overall power. The engines are mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission and the torque produced is 'on-demand' so drivers get the thrills as soon as they depress the accelerator.
Equipment and handling
When it was unveiled in 2019, the Mercedes GLE Coupe offered a stylish and well-designed car with aerodynamics playing a big part to reduce wind resistance by 9% compared to the previous GLE. The air suspension is an option for the standard model with the steering offering good feedback. There's also lots of space onboard and the well-designed cabin underlines the premium offering. In the AMG guise, the Coupe has a distinctive style with the sloping roofline, but also the AMG's air suspension delivers an extremely comfortable ride. The active ride control sees body roll being stabilised and the suspension features adjustable damping. There are also seven driving modes including comfort, slippery as well as trail and sand. Despite the size, the 4x4 set-up delivers good grip and the car is a confident performer when cornering at speed. The GLE Coupe is targeted to deliver what customers are looking for in the premium SUV segment and does so with style. Indeed, the GLE might be a big car, but it's easy to live with and is nice to handle around town and it's a great performer on long motorway journeys. There are two 12.3-inch screens for the infotainment system and the instrument panel. The standard seats offer lots of comfort and there is a new sport steering wheel. The interior features 40 litres of storage space and the view from the driver's seat is good of the road ahead. The Coupe's boot size is 655 litres which extends, with the rear seats folded flat, to an impressive 1,790 litres. Driver assistance systems include active braking assist to help prevent rear-end collisions and to avoid vehicles and pedestrians. There's also a long list of options to help personalise the GLE Coupe. Essentially, the Mercedes GLE Coupe offers an impressive SUV which is one of the best available in the premium segment with lots of refinement and great handling to enjoy.
