Overview of the Kia Picanto

Engines and performance for the Kia Picanto

There are three engines available for the Kia Picanto - either a 1.0 litre petrol engine producing 66 bhp, or a 1.0 litre turbocharged unit producing 99 bhp. There's also a 1.25 litre choice, producing 83 bhp. The 1.25 litre engine has the option of a four-speed automatic gearbox, while the others are mated to a five-speed manual box. Fuel economy ranges from 52 mpg to 64 mpg and all engines offer responsiveness around town.

Equipment and handling

This is the third generation of the Kia Picanto and it now has five seats and five doors as standard. There's a lot of connectivity and driver aids and a stylish exterior. There are nine versions of the car to choose from and while the exterior dimensions make it a small car, the interior design is impressive and there is a lot of space for everyone on board. The Picanto has one of the largest boots in its class at 250 litres and the standard equipment list includes remote locking, electric front windows, tinted windows, electronic stability control, hill start assist and six airbags. Other models come with air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, alloy wheels, autonomous emergency braking and cruise control. The better spec Picantos feature a 7-inch ‘floating’ infotainment display unit that includes satnav and full smartphone connectivity. There are also parking sensors and a reversing camera to help the driver. Opt for the GT-Line or the GT-Line S and these well-equipped models come with larger alloy wheels, leather seats, privacy glass, wireless phone charging and an electric sunroof. As should be expected, the Kia Picanto is a nifty performer around town with smooth gear changing and responsive engines. It's also a comfortable car on long motorway journeys and it is surprisingly agile on winding country roads. The Kia Picanto is an award-winning offering and there's a lot to like about it - for those who are wanting a city car that is well-designed and great to drive, then it deserves to be shortlisted.
