There's just one engine choice for the Kia Optima range - a new 1.6 litre diesel unit. The engine produces 134 bhp with fuel economy of 52 mpg and it is a sprightly performer. There's also a plug-in hybrid choice that offers an all-electric range of 38 miles and emissions of 33g/km - and fuel economy in excess of 200 mpg.

The Kia Optima and the Sportswagon are easy cars to live with. The Sportswagon is an impressive estate with a lot of equipment - the standard list includes dual automatic air conditioning, satnav, an impressive sound system and a reversing camera system. There's also an electronic parking brake, rear and front parking sensors and electronic stability control. Other models come with privacy glass, an eight-way power adjustable driver's seat and lane keep assist. The better spec versions of the Kia Optima Sportswagon have a panoramic sunroof, smart parking assist and forward collision warning. The Optima is a spacious vehicle and a sound choice for families and also for those who need to carry loads over lots of motorway miles with the smooth performing and responsive engine impressing. It's also a nice car to drive around town with a cabin made from premium materials and a lot of nice design ideas. Essentially, the Kia Optima saloon and Sportswagon deliver a spacious and well-made family car that will tick just about every box - and for those who are looking for a stylish load-lugger, then the Sportswagon deserves a closer look.
