The Kia Niro is only available as a hybrid - or the all-electric offering of the e-Niro - and there's also a self-charging hybrid. As a plug-in hybrid, drivers will enjoy fuel economy in excess of 200 mpg and emissions of just 29g/km. The hybrid has a 1.6 litre petrol engine and a 45.5 kW electric motor producing 60bhp. The all-electric range is 36 miles with the combined offering of 139 bhp delivering decent levels of performance. Fitted as standard is a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission which delivers a smooth performance.
Equipment and handling
In a competitive segment, the Kia Niro offers a solid build and lots of equipment including some of the latest active safety and connectivity technologies. The hybrid features autonomous emergency braking, wireless phone charging and lane keeping assist. The Niro also features a reversing camera as well as rear and front parking sensors, privacy glass and roof rails. Comfort levels are high with dual automatic air conditioning, comfortable front seats with eight-way electrical adjustment and a system that automatically de-fogs the windscreen. The Kia Niro delivers a comfortable drive and it's a decent performer around town with nice handling - the fuel economy makes it a cheap to run and enjoyable family SUV. The interior has been well-designed and it is made from premium materials, so it's a comfortable place to spend time. Among the equipment list is adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and blind spot detection. There's also rear cross traffic alert available. The dashboard features a 7-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, and some models come with satnav. Other models have a larger touchscreen, heated leather seats and an improved stereo system. Essentially, the Kia Niro is a practical choice and it's a well-designed family SUV that offers impressive fuel economy and a comfortable drive.
