Hyundai Nexo Review, Specs & Performance

Accomplished hydrogen-fuelled SUV

Efficient and rewarding car to drive

While the hydrogen refuelling infrastructure is still being built-up, there's a lot to recommend the Hyundai Nexo. It's rightfully been described as a 'game-changer' and, as a hydrogen-fuelled SUV, it offers a winning combination.

Overview of the Hyundai Nexo

Engines and performance for the Hyundai Nexo

Launched in 2019, the Hyundai Nexo is the firm's second generation of hydrogen-fuelled vehicles and offers owners a range of 440 miles with five minutes refuelling. The result is a car that produces water vapour as its only emission. The Nexo uses hydrogen fuel cells and also an electric powertrain - the system produces 163 PS with a torque of 395 Nm. To create the energy, there’s a clever system to combine hydrogen from its fuel tanks and oxygen from outside of the vehicle.

Equipment and handling

The Hyundai Nexo is an SUV with a distinctive design and there's only one well-specified trim available. Along with alloy wheels and LED daytime running lights, there's also a high level gloss black spoiler. The car is a functional offering with little in the way of drag to boost fuel economy. The interior is a futuristic two-tone creation that features faux leather and cloth seats that are ventilated and heated and offer full electrical adjustment. There's also dual zone climate control, USB wireless charging and a smart electric tailgate. The instrument binnacle is a 7-inch screen providing the important driving information, including the power, temperature, fuel and speed. There's also the firm's blind spot view monitor incorporated within the screen to offer a real-time display of these blind spots - it's an interesting creation and easy and useful to use. The main touchscreen is 12.3-inches with smartphone connectivity with Hyundai also offering other convenience and driver assistance features such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, remote smart parking assistant and lane following assist. There's also autonomous emergency braking. The Hyundai Nexo has a solid build and it's a nice performer around town with near-silent operation. The autonomous system sees the car effectively piloting itself on motorways and the steering wheel paddles will flick through four regeneration modes. Essentially, the Hyundai Nexo is an excellent offering and though it's not cheap, it's a small price to pay for the future of motoring in a well-made and well-equipped vehicle.
