Overview of the Hyundai I20

Subcompact i20 offers smart design

Lots of safety equipment

The Hyundai i20 is a hatchback with a lot to offer drivers, including lots of safety equipment. It's also a frugal car to run with the specification levels on the better trims impressing.

Engines and performance for the Hyundai i20

The Hyundai i20 was refreshed in 2018 with new styling and connectivity features and there was also a revamp of the powertrain line-up. Drivers can now choose between three petrol engines which include a 1.0 litre unit with a power output of either 100 PS or 120 PS and the 1.2 litre unit offering 75 PS or 85 PS. Hyundai also introduced a seven-speed dual clutch transmission to deliver efficient and comfortable driving and their ‘idle stop and go’ system is also offered as a standard too - the system offers better fuel efficiency and switches the engine off when the car comes to a stop. All of the engines are decent performers around town and offer smooth performance on motorways. There is no diesel option which, Hyundai says, is their responding to market demands.

Equipment and handling

While the Hyundai i20 is competing in a tough segment, there's a lot to attract drivers to the offering. In addition to the equipment list, the i20 is well-priced and has an impressive warranty. Hyundai also introduced its SmartSense active ‘safetysmart’ system when it relaunched the i20 and this features lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, high beam assist and driver attention warning. Smartphone connectivity was also boosted including the installation of a 7-inch display with some cars having satnav. Available in three and five doors, most models have alloy wheels and there's the option of a panoramic sunroof that makes the spacious cabin appear larger. The five door i20 is available with a two-tone roof and Hyundai offers a number of personalisation options. Around town, the i20 is a comfortable car to drive and it offers decent performance on motorways and on winding country roads. The car is easy to live with and feels well-built and well-planted when being put through its paces. Essentially, the Hyundai i20 is a sound alternative to its better-known rivals with a lot to offer in terms of safety assistance equipment and it's an impressive small hatchback that drivers will enjoy.
