Great engines and excellent drive

The new version of the Ford Mustang is a great way to drive a ‘muscle car’ with a rumbling V8 engine under the bonnet. There are also improved driving dynamics and more driver assistance technologies on-board. It still has the athletic styling that makes it a recognisable car and Ford has added bold new exterior colours and an improved interior. For the money, it's a hard to beat offering.

Engines and performance for the Ford Mustang

There's the choice of two engines, an enhanced 5.0 litre V8 that produces 450 PS and is mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox to deliver a responsive and faster drive. It's also more fuel-efficient than it was previously. It helps too that there is a 'good neighbour mode' as part of the new active valve performance exhaust so there's no need to wake neighbours late at night or early in the morning as you return home with a V8 that growls. A revamp of the Mustang in 2018 also saw the introduction of 2.3 litre EcoBoost unit producing 290 PS, which delivers an engaging and responsive driving experience with an over-boost function for the engine's turbocharger to deliver the quick performance boost when needed.

Equipment and handling

Behind the wheel, the Ford Mustang is a great car to drive and the improved driving dynamics make it a sharper proposition than the car it replaced. One reason for this is that Ford's engineers have tuned the Mustang for European driving expectations, so there's a fun to drive character with adjustable suspension and various driving modes for this purpose. The interior has also been revamped with soft-touch materials and a 12-inch digital instrument cluster. Driver assistance technologies include lane keeping assist and pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection. The Ford Mustang is an iconic car which has proved to be a successful product in the UK with options including a boot spoiler to create an even sportier profile. Drivers also have a choice of new metallic colours and forged alloy wheels. The seats are leather trimmed and heated and there's also a heated steering wheel for extra comfort. The Sync3 infotainment system is easy-to-use with lots of functionality.

Out on the road, the suspension and dampers help to deliver a car that grips the road surface and various sensors ensure that handling and performance are always at an optimum. It helps that there is electronic stability control, automatic gear shift patterns and throttle response to deliver a really rewarding drive.
