Overview of the Ford Mondeo

The Ford Mondeo has legendary status in British car history and the latest version offers an upmarket interior, a spacious cabin and excellent engines. There's also plenty of equipment on board and it's a sound alternative to many of its more expensive rivals.

Engines and performance for the Ford Mondeo

There's a wide range of engines available for the Ford Mondeo and all of them are great performers to deliver the decent levels of performance. There is a new hybrid among the selection which also includes three petrol and diesel engines which are coupled to either an automatic transmission or six speed manual box. The entry-level Mondeo has a 1.0 litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit and while this appears to be underpowered it really isn't; the engine is a capable performer and will return around 55 mpg. For those who want good performance around town and on motorways, then the 1.5 litre petrol unit is probably the best option while the 1.5 litre diesel engine returns economy of around 71 mpg and decent performance, particularly at speed on motorways. The hybrid Mondeo offers a petrol-electric self-charging powertrain for those who want to enjoy all-electric driving and better economy.

Equipment and handling

As with all Fords, the Mondeo is packed with equipment and it now comes with adaptive cruise control technology so maintains a safe distance from the vehicle in front. Along with 'Stop&Go' functionality, there's also an intelligent speed limiter and traffic sign recognition. The excellent infotainment system, Ford's Sync3, is easy-to-use and there's no doubt that the new Ford Mondeo has a premium feel to the cabin which is well-designed and well put together - this is a practical family car that will take lots of punishment. The Ford Mondeo is also available as an estate or in the Vignale option - this is a more refined offering with more equipment. There are three specifications to choose from, including the Zetec which features an 8-inch touchscreen and the Titanium which has more equipment. The new Mondeo also has more safety equipment with more options including the choice of alloy wheels and new distinctive exterior colours. There are also new seat fabrics for the upgraded interior and for automatic transmission vehicles, a new rotary gear shift dial.

Essentially, the Ford Mondeo is a large family hatchback car that's a decent all-rounder and worth considering - it's a refined offering with good road-holding and great engines delivering an enjoyable driving experience.
