The Ford Grand C-Max is a stylish car that is not only nice to drive but it's an excellent performer around town - there's a lot to like about the car with even the 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine delivering enough power for enjoyment.

Engines and performance for the Ford Grand C-Max

Since the Ford C-Max comes with an excellent choice of engines for the three trims, the 1.0 litre EcoBoost unit produces 100 HP with a manual gearbox and is a nice offering around town. The fuel economy is 50 mpg though there's a very good 1.5 litre automatic petrol unit with economy of around 38 mpg offering more convenience with a nice shifting gearbox - particularly on long motorway journeys. The 1.5 litre TDCi diesel unit also delivers excellent performance around town with economy of 62 mpg from an engine that produces 120 bhp. All of the engines deliver solid performance for the large car.

Equipment and handling

The Ford Grand C-Max is a multi-activity vehicle with seven seats, though the rear seats are only suitable really for small children. The five-seater C-Max is an excellent offering and the extra space in the Grand C-Max will probably be appreciated by most families. The handling is responsive and sporty and the all-round package is impressive. There's a stiffer suspension on the latest model, which reduces body roll to deliver the agile handling. As should be expected, there is a lot of technology on board, including Ford's active city stop which is a collision avoidance system to help the driver avoid an accident. Should they not respond, then the system will apply the brakes automatically and reduce engine torque. There's also adaptive cruise control and active park assist to steer the car into a parking space automatically. Other sensors help out with cross traffic alert and there is an adaptive front lighting system to suit the road and traffic conditions. A lot of thought has gone into the design of the cabin and there are lots of cubbyholes and storage areas, even in the roof, and it's a great place to spend time with children. It's a comfortable and functional design and a very quiet cabin thanks to thicker side glass. There's the option of a panoramic glass roof which makes the large cabin appear more spacious and airy. While multi-activity vehicles are not the choice of everyone, for those who want a functional and practical family car with plenty of space and safety gadgets, then the Ford Grand C-Max makes for a sound choice with a pleasant driving experience and lots of comfort.
