The Ford Edge is the largest SUV in the firm's range and drivers can expect an attractive looking vehicle with a spacious cabin and lots of equipment. There's also a very large boot to make it a practical choice.
Engines and performance for the Ford Edge
The latest version of the Ford Edge includes a 2.0 litre EcoBlue diesel bi-turbo unit producing 238 PS which is mated to a new eight-speed intelligent automatic transmission to make driving this car easy. There's also the choice of a 150 PS entry level option which offers front-wheel drive only. It too is coupled to the eight-speed automatic transmission. Of the two choices, the 150 HP unit produces enough performance for most drivers and is cheaper to run. For those who need more powerful performance and four-wheel drive, then the 238 HP unit delivers on every level. Fuel economy is around 45 mpg and there is no petrol option.
Equipment and handling
The Ford Edge is, the carmaker says, the most technologically advanced SUV they've ever made. The new offering has been tailored to meet the needs of European drivers and there is a lot of comfort on board. Among the kit are sensor- and camera-based driver assistance technologies to mitigate collisions. These include lane centring, evasive steering assist, adaptive cruise control and post-collision braking. The Edge is also available as the ST-Line and there's an upmarket Vignale version available too. The Sync3 entertainment and communication system is impressive and there are luxurious features including a customisable digital instrument cluster, heated rear seats, heated and cooled front seats and a wireless smartphone charging pad. Despite its size, the Ford Edge offers a pleasant and comfortable drive with the firm's intelligent all-wheel drive system which can be disconnected seamlessly to become two-wheel drive - a useful feature around town. While this is a big car with a distinctively American look, the suspension delivers comfort and there's little body roll when cornering. The Ford Edge is competing at the premium end of the SUV market and it's a sound alternative for those who want lots of space and equipment while enjoying responsive engines.
