The Fiat Tipo offers a stylish family hatchback in an attractive package. There's lots of equipment and space with good levels of performance too.

ENGINES AND PERFORMANCE FOR THE FIAT TIPO

The new Fiat Tipo offers five engines which consist of three petrol and two diesel units. Along with a manual gearbox, there's also the choice of automatic and dual clutch transmissions. The petrol engines consist of a 1.4 litre 16-valve unit producing 95 bhp and a 1.4 litre turbocharged T-Jet engine producing 120 bhp. There’s also a 1.6 litre e-TorQ engine producing 110 bhp - it has the unusual moniker because it is mated to a six speed, torque converter auto gearbox. The turbo diesel units include a 1.3 litre unit producing 95 bhp and 1.6 litre engine producing 120 bhp. Fuel economy for the petrol engines is around 50 mpg with emissions of 132g/km while the diesel engine should return around 76 mpg with emissions of 99g/km.

EQUIPMENT AND HANDLING

The 2016 launch of the Fiat Tipo marked the Italian carmaker's return to a competitive family hatchback market; the five-door car offers lots of space and low running costs. Fiat have also focused on functionality as well as comfort levels and the cabin has been well designed - there's plenty of room for tall adults in the rear seats, for example.

There's also a good list of standard equipment on the three trim levels including Bluetooth connectivity, air conditioning and DAB radio. There's also steering wheel remote controls and options for rear tinted windows, front fog lights and alloy wheels as well as rear parking sensors. Other models come with the firm's Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system, daytime running lights, alloy wheels, cruise control and rear parking sensors. Indeed, the Tipo offers a lot for the money to help it find buyers in a competitive segment.

Drivers will find that the Fiat Tipo is a pleasant vehicle to drive around town and it’s also comfortable on long motorway journeys; on winding roads, the engines offer sound performance, there's plenty of grip and little in the way of body roll. The power steering offers good feedback.

Essentially, the Fiat Tipo offers an interesting alternative in the family hatchback segment with nice styling, lots of equipment and a practical offering; it's also a car that is cheap to run and easy to live with.
