ENGINES AND PERFORMANCE FOR THE FIAT TIPO CROSS

There's just one engine choice for the contract hire Fiat Tipo Cross and it's a 1.0-litre petrol unit producing 99 bhp.

The power is delivered using a five-speed manual gearbox and the three-cylinder engine will return fuel consumption of around 52 mpg. The WLTP emissions are 125g/km.

The engine is impressive around town and it's a comfortable motorway cruiser too. The car comes with two driving modes, 'City' and 'Normal' with a latter offering a smooth driving experience, while City mode makes the steering lighter which is a boon when parking.

EQUIPMENT AND HANDLING FOR THE FIAT TIPO CROSS

The Fiat Tipo Cross is a rugged alternative to the standard car with SUV inspiration. This includes side skirts, black plastic cladding and the front bumper delivering a rugged appearance.

There are also matching silver rails, unique alloy wheels and a new suspension to help smooth out rough surfaces. The raised ride height - it is 70mm taller than a standard Tipo - also makes this an enjoyable car to drive with little body lean.

There's also a specific upholstery for the Tipo Cross and it's a well-designed and comfortable cabin to spend time in.

Drivers get a satnav, a height-adjustable passenger seat, USB ports, an armrest for the rear seats and there are rear and front parking sensors. It's based on the standard Tipo - which is an underrated car to lease - with a new steering wheel design and exterior tweaks.

Safety features include cruise control, lane keeping assist, traffic sign recognition and autonomous emergency braking. There's also driver drowsiness monitoring. Fiat has added a new 7.0-inch display to the instrument cluster, and there's a new 10.25-inch infotainment display featuring the firm's latest Uconnect5 offering.

The Tipo Cross also uses larger tyres than its siblings which help to deliver the robust look, and the revised suspension calibration is similar to that found on the Fiat 500 X crossover. The steering gives good feedback, and the suspension offers confidence when cornering at speed. The Tipo Cross follows in the footsteps of the Panda Cross which has helped to attract younger customers to the brand.

Essentially, the Fiat Tipo Cross is a stylish high-riding family car that delivers enough fun behind the wheel to make it an interesting alternative in a competitive segment. As a car leasing choice, we enjoyed it.
