Engines and performance for the Fiat Doblo
One of the big attractions for the Fiat Doblo is for the economical engines, which include a 1.4 litre petrol unit producing 95 hp and returning 39 mpg, while better economy of 54 mpg comes from the 1.6 litre MultiJet diesel unit. The diesel engine has two power outputs and is more suited for those who rack up more miles, particularly on motorways. The petrol engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox while the diesels have a new six-speed manual box that offers precise movement.
Equipment and handling
The Fiat Doblo is a great choice as a practical family car with lots of space and a big windscreen which means there's good visibility of the road ahead. The engines deliver decent performance and the steering is precise with car-like handling; there's good grip with the newer models delivering better control of body roll. The suspension has also been tweaked so it deals with bumps in the road and the cabin is a fairly quiet place. The seats are comfortable with the boot offering 790 litres which increases to a more impressive 3,200 litres with the rear seats removed. The Doblo is also available with a 'family pack' that adds two more seats and which effectively makes it one of the cheapest seven-seater MPV's on the market. Access is easy with sliding rear doors and while some of the models have basic equipment, the better spec models deliver the comfort and refinement levels that most families are looking for. Standard equipment includes electronic stability control, electronic brake force distribution and anti-lock brakes. There are also plenty of airbags too. Essentially, the Fiat Doblo delivers an MPV that is good value and cheaper to run than most of its rivals and for those wanting the space and practicality, it's hard-to-beat offering.
