Engines and performance for the Citroen C3 Aircross

There's a choice of good petrol and diesel engines for the Citroen C3 Aircross with the entry-level model, the PureTech producing 82 bhp. The engine performs well around town and helps deliver the sprightly performance while other drivers may be looking for better economy which makes the BlueHDi units more appealing. The more powerful of the petrol engine choices will probably the best option and economy ranges from around 55 to 66 mpg with the 1.6 litre diesel units offering the best all-round performance in town and when driving lots of miles on motorways. The engines are mated to either an automatic or manual gearbox and both perform reasonably well.

Equipment and handling

One of the big attractions for the Citroen C3 Aircross is undoubtedly the firm's 'Grip Control' system with hill descent assist. This essentially delivers an enhanced traction system that provides safety and control without the risk of slipping or accelerating when on steep inclines or declines. It is the equivalent of all-wheel drive and is easy to select and it is a strikingly impressive offering whenever it is needed. The Aircross also has up to 12 driving aids, depending on the model selected, including a colour head-up display, intelligent beam headlights, active safety brake and parking assist. There's also a top reversing camera, speed sign recognition and a blind spot monitoring system which some drivers may want considering the bulky design of the car. There's also connectivity and an excellent infotainment system using a 7-inch touchscreen so it's easier to control the air conditioning, telephone, radio and satnav. Some models also have the firm's wireless smartphone charging facility and the voice-controlled satnav system. As mentioned, the Citroen C3 Aircross comes with a long list of personalisation options, Citroen says there are 85 different combinations, to create a distinctive compact SUV design.

While the Citroen C3 Aircross is competing in an increasingly competitive segment, there's a lot to recommend it with lots of equipment and decent levels of performance, particularly around town. For the money, it's a sound offering with the excellent Grip Control giving it the edge over many of its rivals, including those offering permanent all-wheel drive.
