The extraordinary level of power for the BMW X5 M Competition comes from a high revving 4.4 litre V8 petrol engine with twin-turbochargers. It produces 625hp with torque of 750Nm. The power is delivered using an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and the X5 M utilises the xDrive all-wheel-drive system to keep the car on the road. The 0 to 62 mph sprint time is an impressive 3.8 seconds, faster than the previous model and also as quick as many supercars. Fuel economy is 22 mpg.

Equipment and handling

The third generation of the BMW X5 M Competition was relaunched for 2020 and for the vehicle's agility and driving dynamics, it's hard to beat. Along with the power, there's a sports exhaust system that delivers what can only be described as a stirring soundtrack as the car is put through its paces. The all-wheel-drive system can be altered to deliver a sport set up so things become firmer and the car more responsive and its cornering improves. There's little in the way of body roll and this new version will complete the 0 to 62 sprint time 0.47 seconds quicker than the previous model. The car features electronically controlled dampers to deliver a comfortable ride, active roll stabilisation, dynamic stability control and BMW have fitted 21-inch light alloy wheels to the front axle while 22-inch alloys are fitted to the rear. To help boost stopping power, there are M compound brakes fitted and the overall impression is of a car designed to impress. Indeed, it's an impressive mix of power, handling and comfort that really sets the BMW X5 M apart from its rivals. The raised seated position gives a good view of the road ahead and the cockpit is spacious with plenty of room for passengers. The car also features a head-up display and the leather seats offer multi-functionality. The dashboard features a set of buttons to easily access and adjust the dampers, engine, steering, braking system and the M xDrive so everything can be tailored to the driver's circumstances or their own driving style. The head-up display can also be altered to show 'sport' or 'road' settings and for those who want to enjoy what this SUV can do on a racetrack, then there's a track setting too. Standard kit includes parking assistant, which many drivers will find useful, as well as satnav and the carmaker's 'live cockpit professional' setup. Essentially, the BMW X 5 M is an impressive SUV that delivers excellent levels of agility and performance in a very comfortable package.
