Engines and performance for the BMW X4 M

The excellent level of performance for the BMW X4 M is down to a 3.0 litre petrol engine producing 510hp with torque of 600Nm. This SUV will sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.1 seconds and then onto an electronically restricted speed of 155 mph. There's an option to increase this to 174 mph. Fuel economy is 28mpg with emissions of 239g/km and the power is delivered using the firm's eight-speed Steptronic transmission.

Equipment and handling

The BMW X4 M is seen by the carmaker as a sports activity coupe and one that should deliver the same levels of performance as the standard 4 Series coupe. Thankfully, BMW has pulled this off with an excellent SUV for the mid-size segment. Along with the blistering turn of pace, the X4 M utilises all wheel drive to ensure that the power is delivered effectively to all four wheels and the SUV remains well-planted at all times. There's also a limited slip differential to ensure that the power is maintained when leaving corners at speed. The automatic transmission works well with smooth changing and there's manual shifting available using gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. The adaptive suspension can be altered using various driving modes with the comfort setting smoothing out bumpy roads without compromising the handling. In sport mode and sport+, the throttle and suspension become tighter to deliver a more impressive, sports car-like performance. The SUV also features compound brakes as standard, which deliver excellent stopping power. The cockpit has been ergonomically designed to be efficient with the driver in mind and the sport seats deliver lots of comfort. These seats are heated and electrically adjustable for the best position. Standard equipment includes LED headlights, a top-end sound system, driving assistant and acoustic glazing. This last feature makes the X4 M a near silent car to drive and there's also an M Sport exhaust system plus black tailpipe finishers. Also standard is the firm's head-up display so all of the car's useful information is displayed in front of the driver onto the windscreen. Safety equipment includes collision pedestrian warning, active guard, city braking and driving assist with rear cross traffic alert and lane change warning. There's also a parking assistant fitted as standard for both bay and parallel parking manoeuvres. There's no doubt that the BMW X4 M is an excellent and impressive creation, particularly for families wanting a practical SUV but also for those who want a well-made, well-designed and spacious all-wheel drive vehicle with lots of power to deliver incredible performance.
