The BMW X4 is an SUV with impressive performance, good looks and lots of technology on board. It's also a car offering impressive off-road handling and good grip on the road.
The BMW X4 line-up comes with an impressive range of diesel engines; there’s a choice of 2.0litre or 3.0litre turbodiesel units. They are also very quick, for instance the 35d range topper is the quickest X4 model and it will go from 0 to 62 mph in 5.2 seconds. It has fuel economy of 47mpg though the X4 20d should return around 54mpg. The two larger engines come with an eight speed automatic gearbox with gearshifting paddles on the steering column. The entry-level SE is still a nifty performer with its four-cylinder turbodiesel 2.0 litre engine producing 187bhp and sprinting from 0 to 62 mph in eight seconds; it should also return 52 mpg and emissions of 142g/km.
BMW likes to call its X4 a ‘sports activity coupe’ but it's aimed at those who like an SUV with better performance and improved styling. The X4 looks different to most SUVs on the market but it has better performance than most. One reason for its unusual appearance rather than having a classic SUV shape is that the X4 designers decided on a classic coupe shape – indeed some observers could be forgiven for thinking it's a chunky estate car. The roof drops rather steeply into the boot to give the appearance of it being a hatchback rather than a coupe.
The X4 handles extremely well and it has an excellent driving experience, the cabin is also a comfortable place to be. All models come with all-wheel drive as standard to help with its off-road performance though, undoubtedly, most drivers will not be taking the X4 very far from the tarmac. The X4 also benefits from a sporty suspension so it has lots of grip and steering gives lots of feedback.
There are three trim levels and lots of standard equipment in each of them including automatic air con, cruise control, 18 inch alloys, heated leather seats, parking sensors, satnav and DAB radio. There's a premium feel to the cabin, it is well-designed and put together with lots of soft leather and soft touch plastics. Essentially, there's a lot fun to be had in the BMW X4 and it remains one of the more unusual SUVs available today.
