EQUIPMENT AND HANDLING FOR THE BMW IX3

The BMW iX3 is an impressive and stylish electric vehicle to lease that's available in M Sport and M Sport Pro guise.

And less than a year after going on sale, the German carmaker gave it a major refresh. This saw the equipment levels being enhanced and the exterior being improved. The kidney grille is larger than the original version, and there are blue accents to highlight the battery-powered credentials.

BMW has added their fifth-generation eDrive technology for the iX3 which sends power to the onboard 12v power supply and the 400v battery.

Since the iX3 uses the same platform as the best-selling X3, the battery pack has been slung underneath the body which delivers a lower centre of gravity to boost agility and handling. The steering delivers a responsive drive around town, and this is a very quiet motorway cruiser to enjoy.

The suspension is fairly firm so there's little body roll and lots of grip to enjoy the electric motor's power - particularly from a standing start since all of the torque is instantly available. Of the driving modes, Sport mode delivers lighter steering, and the suspension becomes quite light.

There's also a clever regeneration system onboard that utilises the satnav and radar sensors to predict speed limits and upcoming junctions, as well as traffic, to enable the car to coast without using energy.

There are four metallic paint choices, 19-inch aerodynamic wheels, adaptive suspension, an automatic tailgate and a heated steering wheel. The leather upholstery is also available in a choice of four colours and there's sun protection glazing, a Sensatec dashboard, electric seats and ambient lighting.

The iX3 M Sport Pro adds a top-end surround sound system, a head-up display, a parking system plus and gesture control for the infotainment screen. Drivers also get comfort access and automatic high beam assistant.

Drivers of the iX3 can also use one of the largest public charging networks using a smartphone or an RFID card thanks to the BMW Charging network in the UK. Drivers get access to 11,000 charging points, and 173,000 across Europe.

The cabin has been well-designed, it is a stylish and futuristic creation with the odd flash of blue and a 10.25-inch infotainment display. There's also a 12.3-inch digital instrument display. The infotainment is one of the best available and there's plenty of space for passengers, and the boot size is 510 litres.

And while the BMW iX3 has not been tested by Euro NCAP, the X3 sibling has the full five stars and BMW has a strong reputation in delivering safe vehicles - drivers also get to enjoy lots of safety equipment including active lane-keeping and traffic jam assist.
