The Audi e-tron is the firm's first fully electric model and the first of several planned siblings. There is a comprehensive specification and a potential all-electric driving range of 241 miles.

Engines and performance for the Audi E-tron

Underneath the Audi e-tron's passenger compartment is a 95 kWh battery which feeds two electric motors with one being placed on each axle. The power output is up to 300 kW and it delivers, considering the SUV's size, an impressive 0 to 62 mph sprint time of 5.7 seconds. One of the issues for electric cars is the driving range and the e-tron is capable of delivering up to 241 miles and has a top speed of 124 mph. To bring peace of mind, the 241 miles range is a near real-world experience and there are two charging points, one on each wing, to help with connection to a charging wallbox at home or to use a fast DC charging station. The battery will take 30 minutes to reach an 80% capacity when recharging.

Equipment and handling

Behind the wheel, the operation for the Audi e-tron is near silent, though the standard adaptive air suspension system also delivers a smooth travelling experience. The power is delivered efficiently to each axle so the car has a composed and controlled feel and with its quattro all-wheel-drive operation, this is an enjoyable and comfortable car to drive around town and on motorways - it's also an impressive offering on winding country lanes where it delivers grip and little in the way of body roll when cornering. There's a lot of technology onboard, including voice control to boost functionality and the fully digital instrument binnacle delivers an enjoyable Audi virtual cockpit. There's also wireless handset charging, an impressive satnav system and an Internet-based infotainment offering to make this an easy electric car to live with. Safety systems include lane departure warning, a rear view camera and Audi Parking System Plus. It's useful to know that Audi will be launching a second version of its e-tron - an 'entry level' version - in 2020 which will have two electric motors producing 230 kW. The all-electric range will be up to 186 miles and the 0 to 62 mph time is seven seconds. The top speed is restricted to 118 mph. Essentially, the Audi e-tron is an excellent family car with a plush interior and excellent levels of performance. There's lots of space in the backseat and the futuristic cabin is a great place to spend time - for all of the family.
