Don't make the mistake of thinking the Jetta is simply a longer version of the excellent VW Golf - it's got its own look and manages to distance itself from its sibling very easily. Not only is the Jetta cheaper than the Golf but there's also a lot more room on board and it handles really well. Having said that, the two cars do share a lot of components which means they are tried and tested and will not let the owner down.
The Jetta comes in three spec levels and there's a good range of engines to choose from including a 2.0 litre TDI and a 1.4 litre TSI petrol. However there's also a 1.6 litre TDI BlueMotion which is cheaper to run and which utilises stop-start to save fuel. This engine is the most efficient of the range and should return around 67 mpg while having CO2 emissions of just 109g/km. On board, there are similarities to the Golf, but the Jetta is extremely well designed and has a high quality interior. It's also very comfortable car to drive. And because it is longer, there's more space for all the passengers, particularly those sat in the rear seats. The Jetta is also a practical choice and it has a boot size of 510 litres and some models in this four door saloon come with rear seats that have a 60:40 split.
Safety equipment is also a big feature for VW and for the Jetta there is electronic stability control and a full range of airbags, including curtain units. There's also anti-whiplash headrests fitted as standard. The list of standard equipment for the Jetta is also quite impressive and includes electric windows and air con, while other models get cruise control, alloy wheels and steering wheel controls. Opt for the Jetta Sport, which is the top spec model, and the car comes with a lowered sports suspension, sports seats and chrome trim. The Jetta is a great car to drive and its excellent suspension deals with potholes and rough roads adequately and its responsive handling means the steering is sharp and there's good feedback.
The engines also bring an element of fun because they are responsive and with the light steering help to make winding roads a breeze. There's a lot to be said for buying the Jetta; it handles really well, it's extremely well-made and the interior looks and feels robust. This is a quality product which is an excellent alternative to the VW Golf despite the (many) similarities.
