Overview of the Toyota C-HR

Engines and performance for the Toyota C-HR

A revamp of the Toyota C-HR in 2019 saw the engine options being reduced to the choice of a 2.0 litre petrol engine returning 54mpg with emissions of 86g/km. The 1.8 litre hybrids return nearly 60 mpg with emissions of 92g/km. The hybrids are mated to a slick changing automatic gearbox which helps to make the C-HR an ideal choice for driving around town or for a busy commute under all-electric power.

Equipment and handling

For those who are looking for a stylish crossover as a family car, then the Toyota C-HR is certainly worth a closer look, particularly for the cheap to run hybrid offerings. The hybrids offer decent performance, particularly in busy traffic when the automatic transmission and the all-electric power deliver a stress-free driving experience. The C-HR is also a practical choice with a well-designed interior that is spacious and comfortable. The 2019 revamp introduced soft touch materials in the cabin, though there are some hard plastics for those who will use the C-HR for adventures and regular family use. Behind the wheel, the C-HR delivers a rewarding driving experience, it certainly handles better than some rivals with the new platform developed by Toyota giving it a better stance and grip for an enjoyable drive. There's agile performance around town and it's also a confident performer on country roads. Of the engines, the 2.0 litre petrol unit delivers the better performance, though the hybrids are no slouches. Each model offers driving modes of eco, normal and sport, which alter the responses of the accelerator and steering and also the point that the automatic gearbox will change gear. Each mode delivers an excellent experience and the well-weighted steering underpins this. The revamp introduced more equipment with standard kit including cruise control, reversing camera, LED headlights and a DAB radio. There's also a very good infotainment system and an auto-dimming rear view mirror. Other models come with satnav, park assist, keyless-go as well as voice recognition and parking sensors. The top model features two-tone body and roof combination colours, a premium audio system and adaptive headlights. There are also 20 accessory packs to help owners personalise their Toyota C-HR with a list of 200 items, including roof racks and iPad systems. Essentially, the Toyota C-HR delivers one of the best interiors for the segment but it's for the accomplished handling that it really stands out from rivals and for those who want a rewarding-to-drive family car, then the CHR is an SUV you need to road test.
