For anyone needing a spacious family car with lots of equipment, the i40 merits closer attention because it's not only a practical car to choose it's also cheap to run. Hyundai really did help to reinvent itself with the unveiling of the i40 and it gives its more famous rivals a run for their money. In addition to the level of equipment on-board, there's also a high level of practical ideas and lots of space too.
The most frugal engine in the i40 line up is the 1.7 litre Blue Drive diesel which has plenty of power and will return around 66 mpg while having CO2 emissions of 113g/km. Opt for the version without Blue Drive and the economy figures will drop to 43 mpg and the CO2 emissions will increase to 134g/km. That's on a par with the 1.6 litre petrol which has fuel economy of 47 mpg and emissions of 140g/km. The engines help to create an impressive overall performance and the car is surprisingly comfortable for long journeys with plenty of space on board for adults to be carried comfortably.
In addition, the quality of the interior impresses and there are a lots of good practical ideas with an excellent boot size of 500 litres. The suspension is soft to deal with potholes and there's the option of a sport suspension which produces a firmer performance but more agility. The car is also a very quiet vehicle to be in - there's very little in the way of road noise. The car is also very safe to drive having scored full marks in the Euro NCAP crash tests and it comes with electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes. Other standard kit includes hill-hold assist and there's a range of airbags including rear curtain airbags. Hyundai also offers an option for extra safety kit including lane assist to alert the driver when they drift out of a road lane.
Standard equipment includes air con, alloy wheels, Bluetooth connectivity and automatic headlights. There's also a useful system which will detect when the windscreen is becoming fogged and then clear it. Other models also get satnav, heated screens and reversing camera in what is a very long kit list. In what is a great all round offering from Hyundai the firm underpins its great package by offering a five-year or unlimited mileage warranty. Essentially, the i40 is a great car to drive and will deliver excellent performance and comfort for many owners with an all-round impressive package that provides value for money that few can compete with.
