Surprisingly agile small car

The Ford Ka+ is a supermini with a surprising amount of space on board and a rewarding drive. It's also cheap to run with a useful boot size.

Engines and performance for the Ford Ka+

The latest version of the Ford Ka+ has a nice choice of engines, including a 1.2 litre petrol unit producing 70 HP and returning 55 mpg to make this a useful car to drive around town. The fastest engine is the 1.5 litre TDCi producing 95 HP and returning around 70 mpg. There is another version of this engine that returns around 7 mpg more with lower emissions. Too of 99g/km.

Equipment and handling

As a supermini, the Ford Ka+ offers a nice driving experience, not quite as sprightly as the original model but certainly better than its predecessor. Around town, the handling and suspension deliver a comfortable ride and it's also a good performer on motorways. However, the real surprise for the Ford Ka+ is how spacious the cabin is. While it's shorter than the Fiesta, designers have created a cabin that offers more space than most of its rivals. There's a decent list of basic equipment as well including a speed limiter, USB and Bluetooth connectivity. Unlike many of its supermini rivals, the cabin design, particularly the dashboard are not awash with contrasting colours and there's the firm's excellent Sync3 infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touchscreen. There's also a heated windscreen, automatic headlights and rain sensing wipers. Alongside the Ford Ka+, there's the Ka+ Active which has a raised ride height and body cladding for those who want to enjoy something unusual for a small car. Safety features include six airbags, a tyre pressure monitoring system and electronic stability control. The Ford Ka+ also rates well for crash testing and there is extensive use of high strength steel to protect occupants, including the floor and chassis. The designers have also boosted aerodynamics and soundproofing to reduce wind and road noise while sat in the cabin and the suspension has been tailored for Europe's road to deliver a comfortable and smooth ride. The spacious cabin also enables tall adults to sit comfortably in the rear seats and along with the large boot, the rear seats will split 60/40 to accommodate unusual loads. The Ford Ka+ has been a popular choice for more than 25 years now and the 2019 version delivers a stylish car that's easy to live with. For those who want a supermini to deliver a comfortable and rewarding drive around town and be cheap to run, then this small car should be on your shortlist.
