Engines and performance for the Audi R8

While there's just one engine for the Audi R8, it is an incredible 5.2 litre V10 with three outputs. In the entry-level model, the engine delivers 562bhp, while the Performance model delivers 612 bhp and the R8 RWD gets 533bhp. The 0 to 62 mph sprint time is just 3.4 seconds - in the Performance this time is 3.1 seconds - and the engine delivers a real V10 performance to enjoy. However, supercar performance delivers supercar economy, so the R8 will return around 22 mpg.

Equipment and handling

The Audi R8 is an unbelievably quick sports car to race and makes a sound choice for track days. It is also - rather surprisingly - easy to drive and control. The range was relaunched in 2019 to deliver a car with lots of grip and fun to be had. The V10 engine is a great performer delivering the soundtrack to an involving drive. The revamp saw improvements to the steering so there's more feedback and precision for drivers to enjoy. There's no doubt that the Audi R8 is an excellent track day offering with a sophisticated traction control system to help deliver superlative performance. Around town, the driver's seated position is close to the ground but it's still an enjoyable car to drive, though rough roads are not an experience to look forward to. Power is delivered via a seven-speed automatic gearbox with very quick changes and when cornering, the all-wheel Quattro system delivers the grip for confidence. The latest R8 has eye-catching good looks with a minimalist cabin that has been designed for drivers wanting to enjoy the car's high level of performance easily. The cabin itself consists of high quality materials with extensive use of aluminium, carbon fibre and leather. There's also Audi's virtual cockpit, so there are no analogue instruments and all of the car's information is delivered onto a digital screen. While the Audi R8 is not the cheapest of cars, for those wanting supercar performance in a great looking and great performing vehicle, then the R8 should be on your shortlist - it is nothing less than excellent.
