The Mercedes GLA Class is a stylish crossover and a practical choice for many wanting SUV abilities. In addition, its comfort levels are high and it is a quiet car to drive too.
The Mercedes GLA Class is based on the underpinnings of the A Class hatchback and with its modified suspension has impressive off-road abilities because of its raised ride height. It's this soft suspension that helps provide a comfortable ride and it is an agile performer around town and on country roads.
The diesel engines available are all 2.1 litre units with the most frugal being the 134bhp which should return 67 mpg and have emissions of around 110g/km. The GLA is available in two or four-wheel-drive though the latter versions cost more to run, at around 10 mpg. Unless the car is expected to tackle muddy fields or deep snow on a regular basis, the two wheel drive versions offer the best solution.
There's also an excellent 2.0 litre turbo petrol unit available which returns 44 mpg but has emissions of 153g/km and the GLA 45 AMG offer sports car performance and its economy will be around 37 mpg. The basic GLA has a top speed of 125 mph and will go from 0 to 62 mph in around 10 seconds. Opt for the 220 CDI with a power output of 168 bhp and the sprint time is just 8 seconds and the top speed is 134 mph.
There are four models in the GLA Class line-up, from the entry-level 200 CDI to the very impressive 45 AMG. There are just two trim levels and both have lots of equipment, standard kit includes air con, alloy wheels, DAB radio, stop-start technology, collision prevention assistance and adaptive brake assist.
There's also the opportunity of adding various options, including satnav and blindspot monitoring, cruise control and lane keeping assist. There's a lot of space despite its narrow dimensions and the boot is among the largest in its class. The cabin has been well-designed and well-made in materials which help give it the Mercedes touch of luxury.
Essentially, most people wanting a crossover like the look of an SUV but without the size whereas Mercedes have created a crossover that looks like a large car which is what buyers are looking for. The GLA Class offers the best of both worlds in well-made and well-designed surroundings.
