This is the all-new Subaru Impreza which has been redesigned from the ground up and the European spec has now been unveiled.

Among the big changes for the new model are new driver assistance systems that will be fitted as standard.

As usual, fans of the Impreza will find that the unique formula of pairing a symmetrical all-wheel drive to a boxer engine remains.

Fifth generation of the Subaru Impreza

This is the fifth generation of the Subaru Impreza and it offers excellent performance and go anywhere capability without the need for permanent all-wheel drive – and without the need of an SUV.

Subaru have also revised the engines and the gearbox and also used the new car to unveil its new global platform which features a stiffer chassis, responsive handling and better acceleration.

Also, the exterior design offers a more dynamic version of what we recognise as the Impreza with better aerodynamic performance.

Excellent engines for the Subaru Impreza

There’s a choice of two excellent engines for the Subaru Impreza: a 1.6 litre which develops 112 bhp with 150 Nm of torque and a 2.0 litre engine producing 154 BHP with 196 Nm of torque. Both engines also offer technical improvements to boost refinement levels.

There is no indication yet of the economy figures but from the improvements owners will find a performance car that is reasonably cheap to run.

The cabin has also been extensively reworked with a better dashboard and screens in the centre of the console.

There’s a lot that is similar to the underrated Subaru Levorg include very good connected car capabilities including servicing updates, remote functions and emergency assistance features.

Other safety features from the Levorg include the firm’s EyeSight which uses cameras to monitor 360° around the car for potential hazards.

There’s also blindspot detection, rear cross traffic alert as well as blindspot detection among a host of other driver assistance systems.

The 2018 Subaru Impreza was unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show and should be available to order in the coming months.
