Mitsubishi Outlander Review, Specs & Performance

Practical SUV with lots of space

Hybrid 4x4 is excellent

The Mitsubishi Outlander is a practical SUV with lots of space and durability. There's also an excellent hybrid Outlander available as well and this is one of the most popular PHEV cars available in the UK.

Overview of the Mitsubishi Outlander

Engines and performance for the Mitsubishi Outlander

The Mitsubishi Outlander offers a 2.0 litre petrol engine which is mated to a CVT automatic transmission. The engine produces 150 PS and is the better choice for those wanting to tow caravans or trailers. Fuel economy is around 40 mpg with emissions of 171g/km. The Outlander PHEV is an excellent plug-in hybrid with an all-electric range of more than 30 miles, which should suit most commuters. The electric motor is mated to a 2.4 litre petrol engine which delivers performance. The combined power output is 203 bhp and the six-speed automatic transmission delivers the power smoothly and the average economy is 148 mpg.

Equipment and handling

The Mitsubishi Outlander was refreshed in 2019 with new engines and enhancements to the cabin. The SUV offers plenty of torque for those wanting to tow trailers and caravans and it is a good performer when taken off-road - unlike many of its rivals. It's also a surprisingly quiet cabin in which to spend time with a nice ride quality, particularly around town. It is very good for long motorway journeys with the PHEV offering an excellent driving experience in all-electric mode. The steering offers good feedback and there's a good view of the road ahead from the raised driving height. The driving dynamics make the Outlander feel well-planted at all times and drivers will be confident on slippery surfaces and when taking the car off-road. Equipment for the entry-level petrol version of the Mitsubishi Outlander includes a reversing camera and smartphone connectivity. The cabin is a spacious place with the option of seven seats and with the seats folded flat the boot size increases to 1,608 litres. Entry-level models also have 18-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass, roof rails, headlamp washers and front fog lamps. Drivers also get dual zone climate control, cruise control, auto dimming rear view mirror, Bluetooth connectivity and a heated windscreen. There's also a 7-inch colour touchscreen for the infotainment and the alternative model choice has sat nav as standard. Essentially, the Mitsubishi Outlander offers a nice handling, large SUV that will meet most people's needs in a competitive segment, but this is one 4x4 that really will perform well when taken off-road and it's certainly one that needs shortlisting if you need a practical and hard wearing vehicle.
