Audi is one of our more popular makes. The origins of the German car maker, whose official name is Audi AG, can be traced back to 1885 when the car firm Wanderer was first established and which was later became a brand of Audi.
The Audi car maker we know today was formed in 1909 by August Horch after he was dismissed from his first car manufacturing firm after troubles with the finance manager. As he could no longer trade under the name Horch (the court ruled that this belonged to the original company he was dismissed from) it was suggested that he use the name Audi, which in Latin means 'to listen'.
The Audi logo consists of four interlocked rings to symbolise the four German auto companies that originally formed Auto Union (which later became known as Audi). These companies were:
The Audi Slogan, Vorsprung durch Technik, means "Advancement Through Technology" and began to be used in English language advertising in 1982.
In motorsport, Audi has always invested heavily in race financing and is perhaps best known for its performance in rally. Probably the most famous rally car of all time is the Audi Quattro, which was the first ever 4 wheel drive rally car and went on to win various tournaments including the World Rally Championship twice!
