Overview of the Mazda 3

Engines and performance for the Mazda3

The Mazda3 has two engine choices, both are 2.0 litre SkyActive creations and produce either 122 PS or 180 PS. They are mated to either a six-speed manual box or a six-speed automatic transmission. They are responsive units and fairly cheap to run with economy of around 47 mpg in the entry-level model with the more powerful engine returning 52 mpg. The manual transmission offerings feature the firm's mild hybrid system as well as cylinder deactivation to boost the economy when necessary.

Equipment and handling

The Mazda3 was revamped in 2019 and the equipment list extended with the entry level model featuring radar cruise control, air conditioning and rear parking sensors. Other models come with dual-zone climate air conditioning, front and rear parking sensors, as well as a reversing camera. The Mazda3 also features, in some models, driver attention alert and a 12-speaker surround sound system that really impresses. The flagship model is the Mazda3 GT Sport Tech which comes with a leather trim, front and rear cross traffic alert and braking, smart brake support and cruising and traffic support. Standard equipment also includes an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with satnav as well as DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity. Behind the wheel, the Mazda3 offers great handling and it's a fun to drive car that's an ideal choice for families. This is a responsive car to drive with precise steering which makes it comfortable to get drive around town, but it's an excellent performer on long motorway journeys with a comfortable and quiet ride. The cabin is nothing short of impressive and it is up against better-known premium marques without the price tag. Essentially, the Mazda3 is competing in a very tough segment and there's a lot to like about it to put this car on a shortlist, particularly when compared with premium hatchback rivals.
