The Vauxhall Astra is either a compact small family hatchback style car or a Sports Tourer sold by Vauxhall since 1980. Initially assembled in Ellesmere Port, England, until 2022, it is now in its 8th generation. It is manufactured in Germany at the Opal factory in Rüsselseim am Main, Germany; both brands are part of the Stellantis Group.
The original first-generation Astra was Vauxhall’s placement for the Viva and was Vauxhall’s first front-wheel drive car and was an instant success. Looking backwards at the early models, the Mk 2 Astra GTE was a stand-out car of its time. Launched in the mid-1980s, it was one of the fastest hot hatches available.
The 2.0litre 16-valve twin camshaft car with a digital dashboard and over-the-top aerodynamic body styling produced 154bhp (at its peak) and was the must-have car of the 80s for up-and-coming yuppies.
