The Seat Leon Diesel is a great, all-round family hatchback with the diesel engines delivering power and economy. It's also a practical choice too.
There's a good choice of diesel engines for the Seat Leon with the most economical being the excellent 1.6 litre Ecomotive unit that will return a claimed 78 mpg - though its average will be around 67 mpg. The 0 to 62 mph time for the 115 bhp output is less the 11 seconds. The engine is also a good performer around town and on motorways at speed. Along with this, there's the choice of a 2.0 litre unit which is a smoother and quieter option which produces 148 bhp and should return around 64 mpg. It's the 0 to 62 mph time is 8.4 seconds though opt for the same engine in the FR model and the 184 bhp power output will reach the same time nearly a second quicker; even with this excellent level of performance it will still return around 65 mpg with a top speed of 142 mph.
While the Seat Leon Diesel is built on the same platform as the Skoda Octavia and VW Golf, it's a more stylish car with more practicality. It's also good fun to drive. A revamp in 2016 brought in more equipment and some exterior tweaks; the cabin’s restyling is along the lines of other VW Group cars.
Standard equipment includes a touchscreen infotainment system, air conditioning, remote central locking and Bluetooth connectivity. Other models come with alloy wheels and the optional kit list includes an infotainment system with voice commands.
There's plenty of space on board for adults and the boot is a decent 380 litres in size and with the rear seats folded flat this expands to 1,210 litres. Behind the wheel, the Leon delivers an impressive drive with the soft suspension making the whole experience comfortable. The steering is accurate and the handling excellent.
There's a lot to recommend the Seat Leon Diesel which has lots of practicality and is also fun to drive but it's for its low running costs that make it an ideal sporty family hatchback choice.
