As part of a refresh, the impressive Ford Mondeo will have a new hybrid option available.

The sophisticated petrol-electric car offers a self-charging powertrain and excellent levels of refinement.

The enhanced range also sees a spacious and new estate version, also available as a hybrid, joining the line-up.

There’s also lots of new kit being added included adaptive cruise control and ‘Stop & Go’ functionality as well as an intelligent speed limiter.

The engines for the revamped Ford Mondeo include a new 2.0 litre EcoBlue diesel unit that the Blue Oval says will deliver a superior long-distance cruising experience.

The engines also have the option of being mated to an intelligent eight-speed automatic transmission which will adapt shifting patterns to suit the driving style of the driver and this can be controlled with a rotary gear shift style.

However, the hybrid powertrain is sure to attract attention and it delivers 187 PS from a 2.0 litre Atkinson cycle petrol unit that has been specially developed for the purpose.

The electric motor uses a 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery and this model uses an automatic transmission to boost the electric-only offering.

The new Ford Mondeo also has regenerative braking technology fitted and there will be other ways for reducing fuel economy using the firm’s SmartGauge interface.

The carmaker has also worked to reduce drag on the Mondeo’s engine by introducing better electric power-assisted steering, as well as improved air conditioning and various vacuum systems.

On cold winter days, the cabin can be warmed-up more quickly utilising a specially developed heat recovery system that takes its heat from the car’s exhaust gases.

For those who like the estate version, there will be 403 litres of boot space which will extend to 1,508 litres when the rear seats are folded flat.

Ford has also utilised an innovative flat floor which covers the battery pack so unloading and loading bulky items is made easier.

Along with a hybrid, the new 2.0 litre diesel unit will attract attention by offering decent economy figures and low CO2 emissions.

Even the firm’s excellent Sync3 communications and entertainment system is being revamped offering more control and better sound and the system also enables the connection of smartphones and will use simple voice commands.

The new Ford Mondeo, including the hybrid model, is available to order now with deliveries beginning in March.
