This is the impressive new BMW 3 Series saloon which will be on sale early next year.

There’s a lot to like about the seventh generation 3 Series which has revised proportions, less weight and better drag. There’s also a longer wheelbase and wider track.

The saloon also features a new design language to emphasise its driving dynamics and the interior has also been extensively revamped.

Engines for the BMW 3 Series saloon

The engines for the BMW 3 Series saloon are upgraded four-cylinder units and there is a new generation of the six-speed manual gearbox plus the choice of the eight-speed Steptronic transmission available too.

Part of the upgrade sees multistage turbocharging to boost engine efficiency at all speeds being introduced and there’s a revised diesel engine with an output of 190hp which will take the BMW 320d from 0 to 62 mph in seven seconds – it’s slightly quicker in the automatic versions.

Fuel economy is an average of 64 mpg for the diesel engines and slightly less for the automatic versions with emissions of around 115g/km.

There’s just one petrol unit available in the BMW 330i with the unit producing 258 hp and having a top speed of 155 mph. Fuel economy is 49 mpg with emissions of 132g/km.

There’s also the BMW 330e iPerformance version, which is a plug-in hybrid, and this should help the firm meet growing demand for these types of hybrid cars.
