Deliveries don’t start until early next year and there are two engines to choose from.

The latest model showcases the very best in in-car technology with two trims available, the Sport and AMG Line. Mercedes is also fitting its seven speed automatic gearbox as standard.

The engine has a top speed of 125 mph and will sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 10.5 seconds.

The alternative is a 1.3 litre petrol unit found in the A200 which has a 163hp output and will return around 52 mpg with emissions of 121g/km.

There’s also the choice of a 2.0 litre petrol unit, which produces 190hp and will return around 46 mpg, which is available for the AMG Line.

Options for the Mercedes A Class include an executive equipment package which sees an upgrade to the 7-inch central touchscreen display unit to a 10.25-inch version along with the addition of active parking assist and heated front seats which costs £1,395.

There’s also the premium equipment line which will add a 10.25-inch cockpit display, which has a widescreen effect, illuminated door sills and 64 colour ambient lighting along with an upgraded sound system and keyless-go.

The kit also includes electrically operated seats with a memory function, multibeam LED headlights and a panoramic sunroof.

Mercedes is also offering an advanced satnav package which will use a camera from the top of the windscreen to overlay the satnav display with the actual road ahead of the driver on the screen and which, Mercedes claims, should make for more obvious and clear navigation. Some models also have traffic sign assist.

It should go without saying that the new A Class is packed with standard kit including twin 7-inch displays plus the firm’s ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice activation system. There’s also 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic two zone climate control, comfort suspension as well as active lane keeping assist.

The Mercedes A Class has been a bestseller for the carmaker and the new model will undoubtedly be a popular draw as well.
