The Audi R8 as a droptop will impress
As super sports cars go the Audi R8 is an all-round impressive creation and now there’s a convertible version with its V10 Spyder.
Set to go on sale later this year, the new car made its debut at the New York motor show and is capable of reaching 197 mph.
Its sprint time from 0 to 62 mph is just 3.6 seconds from a 5.2litre engine that develops 540 PS. The car’s economy, it is said to have 10% better fuel efficiency than the previous Spyder, and will return 24 mpg with emissions of 277g/km.
New driving dynamics system in the Audi R8 Spyder
In addition, there’s a new driving dynamics system in the Audi R8 Spyder and the frame has been made 50% more rigid which gives it more stability in corners and composure at speed.
There’s also debut for a smart Bang & Olufsen audio system with speakers mounted in the headrests and there is a rear window in the bulkhead which can be retracted when necessary.
New droptop looks very similar to the Audi R8 coupe
Except for a few design tweaks, the new droptop looks very similar to the Audi R8 coupe though there is a noticeable wide deck which is home to the folding fabric roof – which can be folded within 20 seconds at speeds of up to 30 mph.
There’s also no longer a glass panel to see the engine and Audi has introduced a synthetic textile wind deflector which leads to much reduced airflow around the head of the driver and passenger.

Owners will find that the virtual cockpit display system is the same as can be found in the Audi TT and there’s a big red starter button fitted too.
Audi are also making much of the R8 Spyder’s ‘guttural roar’ from the exhaust which will help deliver a thrilling open top driving experience.
