Fleet managers are being invited to visit the UK’s first hydrogen fleet facilities.
The University of Birmingham claims that its hydrogen gas fuelling station is the only one of its kind in England and it is hoping that other fleets will benefit from its knowledge and experience.
The university is currently conducting comparison tests of five fuel cell cars against its fleet of petrol, diesel and electric vehicles as part of a two-year research study into hydrogen fuel technology.
It believes the fuelling station, situated on its Edgbaston campus, is the first step in building a nationwide network and hopes the public sector and business fleets will become early adopters of the green technology.
If successful, the university hopes it will be able to commercialise the project in the third year, with fuel cell vehicles taking over duties such as delivering post and catering around its campuses on a full-time basis.
A spokesperson for the university’s Department of Chemical Engineering said they would be keen to hear from interested parties who want to come and see what they are doing and how the hydrogen infrastructure could be developed.
