In a fiercely fought sector more people should really take a closer look at the all-round impressive qualities of the hand built Phaeton which will surprise and entice at the same time. The car is not only cheaper than many of its big name rivals but also has more equipment on board than most and offers a better ride. Unfortunate, for many people the Phaeton is the little-known car from this firm and of those who do know it, regard it as being a super-luxury product.
The Phaeton is undoubtedly the flagship car of the VW product line and, as such, it offers the very best of what the firm can produce. It is powered by an impressive 3.0 litre V6 TDI 4MOTION diesel engine which will return around 32 mpg on the combined cycle while having CO2 emissions of 224g/km. However, the power of the engine is obvious in its excellent handling and there's lots of torque which will see this big car accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 8.3 seconds. There's an automatic six speed gearbox which is effective and smooth. The Phaeton also has permanent four-wheel-drive which means there's plenty of grip on the road to help the driver keep control. In addition, the adaptive air suspension will adjust itself to match the road surface to ensure that the car is always comfortable to drive.
The most recent revamp saw some tweaks to its exterior to help it fit in with the other cars in the VW line-up. As you would expect, the Phaeton is packed with luxury and technology. The interior is well-designed and the wood trim and leather finish is very impressive. Standard equipment includes a four zone climate control system and electric front seats which can be easily adjusted. There's also parking sensors and satnav among the extensive list. There's also plenty of room in the back with lots of legroom for the rear seat passengers and there's even a long wheelbase model which has even more legroom.
The Phaeton is also fairly practical and the boot size is simply huge - it measures at 500 litres and the sound proofing is excellent with barely a sound being heard from the outside of the vehicle. There's a decent list of safety equipment including electronic stability control, lots of airbags including curtain airbags and anti-lock brakes. The Phaeton is an all-round impressive car but it's fighting in a fierce sector which means that some people will be put off by its badge but they may be missing out on an excellent vehicle that offers great value for the luxury it brings.
