A Bit About Peugeot

Peugeot is a French automobile manufacturer part of the Stellantis group. Initially a family business, it was founded in 1810 as a steel foundry making hand tools and kitchen equipment and then moving on to bicycles in 1858.

As a forward-thinking manufacturer, the Peugeot family took an interest in the early automobiles; at the start of the early 20th century, Paris was awash with small automobile manufacturers, and after a meeting with Daimler, the Peugeot family decided that combustion engines were the way forward. Adopting a Panhard engine manufactured under licence from Daimler, the car, Type 3, was more sophisticated than many of its contemporaries, and in total, Peugeot built  29 cars in 1892.

These early models were given type numbers, which Peugeot has continued to do today. Peugeot also was one of the first manufacturers to fit Michelin rubber tyres to their cars, and by 1903 Peugeot produced half the cars built in France.

Peugeot had success in motorsport’s early days, including victories at the Indianapolis 500 in 1913 and 1916.  However, with the advent of the First World War, Peugeot turned its production mainly to arms and military vehicles.

The first mass-produced, low-cost car built by Peugeot was the Peugeot 201, released after the Great Depression in 1929. The 23 bhp 1.2-litre engine 4-door saloon, over its 8-year lifetime, sold 142,000 units.

Peugeot has received many international vehicle awards, including six European Car of the Year awards. To see more famous Peugeot cars of the past, like the iconic 504 or the world rally-winning 205, visit Peugeot History.

Peugeot Motor Sport

Peugeot have been involved in many successful motorsports for over a century, with victories including the Indianapolis 500 in 1913, 1916 and 1919. Peugeot sport won the World Rally championships five times in 1985, 1986, 2002,2001, 2002, The Dakar rally seven times, The 24 Hours of Le Mans three times, and many other accolades worldwide.

It competes in the FIA World Endurance Championship with its radically designed hypercar, the Peugeot 9X8. With its ground-breaking design, the rear wheels are driven by a 2.6-litre bi-turbo V6, while a high-performance 200-kilowatt electric motor drives the front wheels.

The enthusiasm for sport motorsport trickles down to Peugeot’s new 508 508SW Sport-Engineered saloons.
